King Ghost was directed and written by Jess Cope and produced by John Cope.

“Much like the song, the video Jess has created focuses more on rich colours and expressing thoughts and feelings though more abstract images, something that takes our collaboration into new territory.  It's stunning and I'm incredibly proud of the combination of the song and the video.” Steven Wilson

People Who Eat Darkness

Client: Steven Wilson

Directed by Jess Cope - 2017

Here's a short clip from my most recent animation, created to accompany Steven Wilson's song People Who Eat Darkness. Steven says "Jess' work has become synonymous with the more sad and tragic songs in my catalogue, such as Routine and The Raven That Refused to Sing, but this one is for a completely different type of song, and the film comes across like a dark horror that combines elements of Frank Miller and Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window. The full animation will be screened exclusively at shows on the forthcoming To the Bone tour". Note: there are no plans to release this video online at present.

Drive Home

Client : Steven Wilson

Directed by Jess Cope - 2013

From Steven Wilson's album 'The Raven That Refused To Sing (And Other Stories)', Drive Home is the story of Charles, searching for his lost love, Lucy. One day a chance find triggers haunting memories and leads Charles towards the truth. Based on a short story and original artwork by Hajo Müller.

Both of those animations (Drive Home and The Raven that Refused to Sing) are done by one Jess Cope, a South African animator who also worked on Frankenweenie and whose style is influenced by Tim Burton. Ms. Cope and Mr. Wilson are perfect foils for one another, and I hope that they will work together again in the future.

King's Highway

Client : Scorpion Child

Directed by Jess Cope - 2014

This film was made for US rock band Scorpion Child's self-titled debut album. It was made using a combination of paper puppets, oil on glass and digital effects. A man's journey is cut short when his car breaks down on a remote highway and strange things start to happen.

Jess Cope's work for our new 'Kings Highway' video is masterful! We are enamored by her artistic eye and ability to create a fantasy trip with an ethereal visual that's captivating and timeless.

The Raven That Refused To Sing

Client : Steven Wilson

Directed by Jess Cope & Simon Cartwright - 2013

Elijah lives alone in his cabin in the woods, sworn to a life of solitude after the death of his sister during their childhood. While foraging in the woods, he encounters a Raven that sings to him, like his sister did when he was young. He captures the Raven, hoping its singing will return his sister to him in some way. Based on a short story and original artwork by Hajo Müller.

While every other song on the album feels rooted in reality, this song has a feeling of fantasy about it that I really enjoy. Perhaps that feeling is because of the song's video, which is a sight to behold. The whole thing is done in a cut-out paper style, which gives it an amazing, hand-crafted feel. It makes you think that the creation process behind the song was an enormous investment of time and effort, which, based on the level of emotion I feel when hearing it I'm sure it must have been.
